Cymbal Modification/Repair/Polishing services When a good cymbal develops a crack, it can really be a drag. Besides the fact that they’re expensive, good ones are hard to find! About ten years ago, when one of my favorite crashes developed a crack on the edge, I took what I learned working metal at my dad’s body shop and put it to work on a cymbal. And no, I’m not talking about welding. After removing the offending crack, I cleaned up and polished the edge, so that it would be nice and smooth like the factory edge, and played it....the cymbal still sounded great!
Obviously, there is a limit to what size of a crack can be notched out without degrading the sound of the cymbal. The key is to inspect your cymbals often, and catch ‘em early.
Like many drummers, I like to have clean cymbals, but when they’re really old and green it can be very tedious. I’ve found a few techniques that allow me to get superior results compared to the old ‘elbow grease and a towel’ method we’ve been stuck with for so long.
Also, I’ve been asked to resize a few cymbals over the years, and while it is labor intensive and consequently a little pricey, it can be done.
Unfortunately, like the refinishing, I’m unable to take on any work at this point in my life. But I hope you enjoy the pictures. If this changes in the future, I’ll post here.
